Understanding What Is Self-Care and The Idea Behind It

Anything can be self-care if you’re mindful of your surroundings and committed to slowing down. Many people believe that the solution to slowing down is bubble baths and facial masks, which can occasionally be effective, but you cannot stop what you are doing in order to take a bath or put on a mask.

When it comes to self care as a multipotentialite being, it can be quite a struggle to figure out as most of the time you have, is focuse on the many projects you are working on.

Over the years, there has been quite the hype about self care, how intentional one should be and if self care is luxurious or not – before we go into details of self care idea, let’s understand the word ‘Self Care ‘.

Doing a deep search on Google on what exactly is self-care, will most likely take you through a lot of articles and blog posts. According to this article published by WHO state that:

Self-care is the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health worker.

World Health Organisation

Understanding what “self-care” is at its heart and why it matters can be challenging because the term has grown so broad and ambiguous. Here at novellisteer these days feels more and more like something else I need to do more of, do better at, spend my thought and time on.

Therefore saying the definition of self care is applicable to everyone seems far fetch, as the definition varies from person to person. Self care habits will vary from person to person, and even over time, your idea of self care may evolve.

What constitutes self-care will certainly vary from person to person, and what constitutes self care for you one day may not feel like it the next day.

Checking in with oneself, figuring out how one is doing, understanding what one needs, executing those needs one needs, and asking oneself how one is doing is a necessary part of self care.

Self care is a way for us to give to ourselves and relieve strain from the daily grind. It doesn’t necessitate purchasing anything, contrary to what many influencers would have you believe. It can be as simple as making a cup of your favourite tea or taking a quiet minute to reflect.

There are quite a number of reasons, people implement self care. People use it to cope with stress while others use it to stay in tune with their surrounding as your perspective plays a role in determining what types of ideas constitute self care for you.

Some set of people prioritizes the activities that will provide them satisfaction, even if the procedure is laborious because the end result is what matters to them. Anything can be self care if you’re mindful of your surroundings and committed to slowing down.

Many people believe that the solution to slowing down is bubble baths and facial masks, which can occasionally be effective, but you cannot stop what you are doing in order to take a bath or put on a mask.

Like every other topic, self-care can be categorised into 8 different types. There are others who insist that it is 6, but here at Novellisteer, we like to go with an article published by modern therapy online that stated that self care is 8, namely:

  1. Emotional self care
  2. Physical self care
  3. Spiritual self care
  4. Financial self care
  5. Psychological self care
  6. Social self care
  7. Professional self care
  8. Environmental self care

Over the course of the last months, one thing we had come to realise is that often time influencers tend to justify the action they had taken as self care rather than self soothing.

You might ask what self-soothing is, well this is an action one takes by using goods or services to feel better, and an article by Modern Therapy Online defined ‘self-soothing focuses on backup skills for use within a crisis or when needing support to resist some type of negative urge’.

One thing is for sure, is that self-care is multifaceted just like you are multipotentialite – therefore regardless of which definition you choose the most important thing is the end result and that is making sure you derive joy or happiness from it.
