Nothing is more important than loyalty, but what if you’ve sworn to protect the one you were born to destroy? Tarisai has always longed for the warmth of a family. She was raised in isolation by a mysterious, often absent mother known only as The Lady.
The Lady sends her to the capital of the global empire of Aritsar to compete with other children to be chosen as one of the Crown Prince’s Council of 11. If she’s picked, she’ll be joined with the other Council members through the Ray, a bond deeper than blood.
That closeness is irresistible to Tarisai, who has always wanted to belong somewhere.
But The Lady has other ideas, including a magical wish that Tarisai is compelled to obey: Kill the Crown Prince once she gains his trust. Tarisai won’t stand by and become someone’s pawn—but is she strong enough to choose a different path for herself? With extraordinary world-building and breathtaking prose.

When I first heard of this book, my curiosity open, the more I read about the book and it inspired the more my curiosity grew like an ocean that knew no boundary (What a word be trying to improve my wording and write from the heart, mind and body) and I was not disappointed but I have to say this is one of those books that require your focus and imagination much like lord of the ring in term of the names mentioned in the book.

This book is much more than what you initially expect it to be, this book follows the journey of a character who in the beginning was assign and train to kill a target from birth to finding purpose in an impressive way.

One thing that is positive for this book is to read it through my eBook voice narrator because your girl needs to get those name pronounced probably or bet yet I might buy the audio version of the book.

The book is a view through the eyes of a young woman, Tarisai, also know as made of me on discovering herself in the midst of The lady purpose Tarisai journey alone is brilliant writing and we learn quite a lot from the way she views the world and everyone around her, her journey also lead to some event that leads to an adventure of seeking, honour and finding purpose.

This book also talks about the injustice women face when it comes to power and how when they decided to revenge they usually view as the devil while the man can do a shit lot because he is the leader, A part of me want The Lady to never end there; maybe there is a way the author could do more justice to her back because I feel like The Lady deserve so much more, yes the lady was one character I really like even more than Tarisai.

I dislike how she left, she needs justice, yes she might have done a lot of right in her own view and wrong in others view, I know am ramble about her, but I just want more of her, in the book I read it in a way that she is at peace with everything.

When I read on some of the action TarisaiI love the way the author manages to input some life struggles and topics such as colonization, inequality of class and race, male-dominated power structures, racism, sexism, privilege, generational trauma and control through fear without it feeling over the top like it there but you could miss it if you don’t put much attention into reading the book.

As this is her debut book, am actually impressed with the way the author Jordan writes her character like I can’t think of a single developed character in this novel that wasn’t written dazzling way, regardless of what role the character hold, you are introduced to someone who feels so written out that they could be a real person.

Another that I feel should be said is that this book is that one that you can’t pick for a quick read it a book that required your focus and attention.

At the end of the book, I was surprised at the character development in this novel, I had said the character that spoke more to me were Sanjeet, The Lady, Woo in ( the traitor prince ) and Kirah; for that, I could go on at length about the expert complexities of Sanjeet, the deeply fascinating Kirah and the complexity of The Lady. This book has so many unexpected plot elements that leave you with curiosity for more.
